The Boy & The Owl

The air shifts, the wind brings in chills as the January air flows through a boys window. Sadden by his current life he thinks about people he's hurt, lives he's ruined, his owned life. The hour strikes 2 am and he sits and stares out the window letting the cold chilling air dry the streams on his face. "What's saddening you boy?" the wind whispers as it gently flows through the tree tops. The boy looks down and says "I've done so much wrong in this life of mine, I've burned so many bridges, I've fallen short of many plans, I've made people sad, I've messed so many things up and I don't know what to do. It's gone too far to make amends. Take me with you wind, take me to better life such as yours." "As you wish boy" The boy makes his way outside to the harsh wintery outdoors, he puts on his coat. "I'm ready wind, show me a better life than the one I've been given, for in this life I am sadden with every move I make." "As you wish boy" The wind suddenly shifts towards the left and the boy heads in that direction eager to leave his past life behind. Shivers rush down the boys spine, goosebumps fill his arms, and make his eyes water. "Why are you blowing so hard wind? Are you eager to show me this life as well? I do wish we'd be there soon for it is getting hard to see but I suppose that doesn't matter since I just need to feel your cool air." The boy keeps heading on, not complaining about how his legs are getting tired. He bumps into something hard and scratchy. "Ouch, I'm sorry I didn't see you there" "This boy, is Tree, for he produces new life when the time is right. He appears bare now, but come spring a new lives all around him shall rise. He shall be full of leaves, ready to provide shade to the young squirrels and hares. He shall help you with your new life as you wished." "Thank you dearest wind. I do have much gratitude towards you." The boy looks up to Tree "Are you cold Tree? Here take my jacket, it's the least I could do for your help." "Oh thank you boy, that is rather kind of you but you need to keep warm too, so you keep it. Why have you left your old life?" The boy looks down "You see Tree, I've ruined very many things in this life, relationships with people close to me and it's gone too far for making amends." "I'm deeply sorry to hear this boy. Amends may always be made, though it may take time amends can be made." "It's been so long though Tree. I just don't know" the boy frowns. "But as you wished I'm here to help you find a new life. For I give new life each spring, life grows from my branches provides shade for animals and shelter for the birds when Thunder comes around." "Thank you Tree" "You're very welcome boy. Climb up and sit on my branches there is one who'd like you to meet up there." The boy smiles and nods and climbs the bare tree. "Climb to my highest branch boy" the boy does so and see's a owl sitting on a branch. The boy carefully walks across the large branch and sits next to the owl. "Hello" the boy says shyly. "Why hello there! Who might you be?" the owl says with a smile. "I'm looking for a new life, I've messed up so much in my old one." "Oh, I am truly sorry to hear this boy but you can always make life better if you look to the bright side of things though it may be hard and may take time things will get better. And it's always better to make amends because who knows how long you have with that person." the boy frowns "Do you really think so? Oh I'm sorry I haven't gotten to know your name yet." "I know so. Oh I am very sorry! I am Oliver the owl, I am the youngest member of my family of five. You shall meet my family soon, they are out looking for food, I've hurt my wing so I am unable to fly with them." "I'm sorry Oliver, is there anything I can do to help?" "Just talk to me" Oliver smiles as does the boy. The two instantly become friends, they talk for hours, they both ask questions about each other, they laugh together and smile together. "You're rather fun Oliver and you're very kind." "Thank you, as are you boy." The boy shivers as the temperatures suddenly drop a degree or two. "Are you cold boy?" "Just a tad" the boy chuckles. "Here, maybe I can help." Oliver slides over closer to him and goes under his arm. "Is this a little better? My feathers should help keep you warm" "Yes thank you very much owl." the two then continue to talk for quite a while, the moon hangs high above the sky and suddenly four silhouettes appear in the moonlight, growing larger by the second. "Oh goodie, my family is here!" "Hello Oliver!" says the largest owl, "Hello mother! Meet my new friend" the boy smiles "What a pleasure it is to meet you. I am Valerie Oliver's mother." "It's very wonderful to meet you Valerie." they shake feather and hand "These are my other three youngsters Amy, Francis, and Kate" "It's nice to meet you all." the boy smiles "You too!" they exclaim simultaneously. "So what brings you to these part boy?" "I'm looking for a new life, for the one I've had I've ruined many things." "Oh my, well I'm sure things aren't ruined forever. There's always time to fix things." "Yes, that's what Oliver had told me." "Yes, there's always time to make amends with people you've hurt." "Thank you Valeri" says the boy. They all talked, laughed, and smiled and snuggle together to keep warm in the January air. Oliver and boy grow closer by the second, the boy is very happy with the owls but he knows he cannot be truly happy with his new life until amends are made. The boy is scared to try it, he stays with Oliver and the rest of the owls pondering whether or not he should do it for three days. On that final him and Oliver are talking in the tree. "What are your thoughts Oliver? Should I do it?" "It'll make you truly happy and whole boy, I think so. But if you return back to your old life I will miss you terribly." "And I will miss you just as much Oliver, but I will visit you every night no matter what, you were correct I should make these amends. Thank you for everything Oliver." "You'll visit me every night boy?" Oliver smiles "Yes absolutely." the boy smiles back. "I love you boy." "And I love you Oliver." the two hug and the boy asks the wind to show him the way home. The boy makes his amends and stays true to his word, he would visit Oliver his best friend until the end, the two grow old together, laugh together, and smile together.
